Student Success Statement

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on that very day, to make that practice a masterpiece. This rule is even more important in life than basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be. It begins by trying to make each day count and knowing you can never make up for a lost day.”
John Wooden
I think John is right. You have to try your hardest to improve. Every day you have to learn from your own mistakes and the mistakes of others to become a better person and keep moving forward. For example, if you are playing basketball, and you miss a few shots, then you should try your hardest to improve your shots, practice. I think that’s what he’s trying to tell us, to always keep trying to improve and practice.

“I think it better to do right, even if we suffer in so doing, then to incur the reproach of our consciences and posterity.”
Robert E. Lee
I think that Robert is right. It is better to suffer for just a moment and do what is right, than to suffer for a long time doing what is wrong. For example, if someone has committed a robbery or something like that, and they lie, then they will have a long period of suffering. They soon start to feel guilty and down because of what they did, but as soon as they tell a lie, the pain might be there for a few moments while they’re saying it, but their suffering will be gone. Always tell the truth and feel good, don’t lie and feel bad. Like the famous saying; it’s better to hear the bitter truth, than the sweetest lie.

“Try a little harder to be a little better.”
Gordon B. Hinckley

I think that this is what everyone should be doing. Trying your best to be a little bit better for not just yourself, but for others as well.  When you do this, that little bit you improved goes a long way. You will then be a little better in the sense that you are a better person and you will have more to offer. When you have tried harder a million times, then you will be a million times better. All of this adds up to be something big and then you will be something big. A better person.
