Using the Web Wisely

Thanks to the Web, information is easy to find. However, it’s also easy to post something online. Anyone can do it.

You’ve probably used the Internet to do a research paper, to help you decide which product to buy, or to form an opinion about current events. Looking up information online is fast and convenient. But when you do an online research, it’s important to find sites you can trust.

Many websites claim to have the facts, but are full of errors. Others present information in a biased way—they only give one side of an argument. How can you tell a reliable source from an unreliable one? Also, it is critical that you post online only that which is descent and appropriate, never anything pornographic, vulgar, indecent, out of taste, untruthful, or obscene. Post things that will make a good name for you and your organization, that will promote goodwill and be the benefit to the world.

I agree with William. You have to concentrate in order to succeed. You can’t go anywhere being distracted and going all over the place, you need to stay focused and try your hardest. For example, when you are going to shoot a basket, you need to concentrate on that one thing and focus, your mind can’t be on something else. If you focus and concentrated hard enough, then you would make that shot. It’s really simple to focus, you just have to put yourself to do it.

As you survey the text, ask a question for each section. Ask what, why, how, when, who, and where questions as they relate to the content. Here’s how you can create questions:

·     Turn the title, headings or subheadings into questions.

·     Rewrite the questions at the end of the chapter or after each subheading in your own words.

Write down your questions. Questions help you pay attention, understand the text better and recall the information more easily later on.

Read

Read on section of the chapter at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section. Pay attention to bold and italicized text that authors use to make important points.

Be sure to review everything in the section, including tables, graphs and illustrations—these features can communicate an idea more powerfully than written text.

I agree with Robert. What you do in this time is what you will be in the future. What you do in the present can affect your outcome, it can affect your future. For example, if you are not doing your homework today, when it is due tomorrow, then chances are that you will get a bad grade. Your future is preset and the outcome is certain. As to if you do your homework, then you will get a good grade and pass that class, that future can also be secure. Like I said before, what you do right now, affects what will happen tomorrow.

It is a proven technique to sharpen your study skills. In college, you’ll be required to do lots of reading. You’ll often have to complete reading assignments in several different books for several different courses at a time.

SQ3R helps make reading and studying purposeful and effective, so that you use your time most efficiently. Here’s how this strategy works.

Survey

Let’s say your assignment is to read on chapter. First get an idea of what the chapter is about by reviewing the highlights:

·    Read the title, headings and subheadings.

·    Notice words that are italicized or bold.

·    Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps, and other visual material.

·    Read captions.

·    Read the very beginning and end of the chapter.

I agree with Ayn Rand, there is no justification for the choosing of something evil, it will always be wrong. There simply is no justification to what you choose, whether you think that it might be right, it will be wrong. For example, if you choose to not do your homework because your teacher won’t go to school the next day, you are still doing something wrong. You think that it’s okay because nothing will happen, but it’s still not okay. Ayn is just trying to tell us not to choose the wrong for any reason, whether you think it’s right, ever.

Tip 5: keep a List of Questions

When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they have read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner.

Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefor will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.

The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge about and making the most of your education. So pick up a book … and a pen.
